  2. Vanik: the Baraxus Bridge Chronicles (Book Two).
  3. Death Rides Again (Jocelyn Shore #3) by Janice Hamrick.

This book is humorous and well written. I plan on reading the first book in this series to get all the background that sets up this story. However, this book can stand on its own. It was an enjoyable read with an interesting location.

Jun 27, Jan rated it liked it Shelves: Jocelyn and her cousin, Kyra are joining their family for Thanksgiving on the family ranch. They have barely settled in when the no-good husband of a cousin turns up on the ranch, dead of course. Now all eyes turn to their uncle Kel who recently threatened the deadbeat. And the deceased wife is missing. What kind of holiday is this going to be?

Jocelyn wants to find her missing cousin and find the real killer. She is also juggling to suitors. Not to mention having to put up with Kyra. This series is a lot of fun. She is so nice and smart. Kyra is not my favorite and I sometimes wish Jocelyn would just slap her. But they have a real bond so I have to put up with her too. But for me it is the characters and the setting that make the cozy and this series has both in spades.

A series that just gets better with each book. Death Rides Again was great. I love the witty, dry, tell-it-like-it-is dialogue that doesn't hold back.

Death Rides a Chestnut Mare (Danny Duggin, #1) by Ralph Compton

I love the sarcasm used judiciously by the main character Jocelyn. I'm loving the new love interest. The only thing I didn't love was the overall theme of hunting - I hate hunting animals with a fervent passion. Luckily, most of it was talk and no animals were overtly harmed in the story.

This one takes place at the family's ranch over the Thanksgi A series that just gets better with each book. This one takes place at the family's ranch over the Thanksgiving holidays and while I usually don't care for mysteries that take place "away from home" none of the mysteries in this series have taken place in the same place, so no real sense of a permanent setting has ever really been established.

The plot was complicated, twisted, and well done. While I suspected I knew who the villain was, I was only a tiny bit right in the end.

Once the standoff ends, the guy takes off and her cousin goes home, only to disappear soon after. The action picks up from there, with people looking for the missing girl and her husband turning up dead.

Will her uncle be arrested or did the man have It's Thanksgiving in Texas and Jocelyn Shore is at her Uncle Kel's ranch for a family reunion. Will her uncle be arrested or did the man have other enemies? There are several stories going on at once, each one expertly tied together at the end. There's also romance, but it doesn't interfere with the plot. Too many times that's not the case. Jocelyn is a strong and interesting character, one I plan to follow.

This is the first book I've read in this series, but I do plan to go back and read the rest. Feb 27, Dharia Scarab rated it really liked it. Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future. This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author. This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP. When cousin Ruby Jane goes missing and later her black-sheep husband is found murdered, Kyla and Jocelyn investigate on their own when her uncle turns out to be the prime suspect.

Jocelyn's wanna-be boyfriend Austin detective Colin Gallagher offers aid to the local sheriff, but ends up injured when he gets too close to finding answers. Jocelyn and Kyla come face to face with death and stare into the Jocelyn and cousin Kyla join the entire Shore clan for a family reunion at her Uncle Kel's ranch. Jocelyn and Kyla come face to face with death and stare into the hungry face of a lion.

The mystery weaves an exotic animal hunting ranch, a horse betting rivalry, a lawsuit disputing land ownership, and Mexican cartel and drug deals into an exciting but fun story. Jul 05, Julia rated it really liked it. In Hamrick's new mystery, we are introduced to many of Jocelyn Shore's family members, as they all descend on the family ranch for Thanksgiving. This is only fitting, as part of the allure of these mysteries is the relationship between Jocelyn and her cousin, Kyla. This book was not nearly as enjoyable as the previous one in the fact there were so many tearful episodes which detracted for the really great story hiding in the tears.

But at one point in my life, i loved this book: Oct 11, Jason King rated it it was ok. Pretty choppy and has some serious pacing issues like shooting two people, the first two people the main character ever kills, who bushwhack the main character gets a paragraph, but the book is still pages long.

Doesn't have a real ending. I don't regret reading it, because it was fun, but I wouldn't call it a good fun read. Apr 30, Lisa Gines rated it it was ok Recommends it for: I don't normally read westerns, but my dad passed this on to me. It was a fun little book to read. I think the story could have progressed faster. There is a sequel that, I think, finalizes the story.

I had to suspend reality a little more than normal. May 28, Sam L rated it it was ok. The cover compared the writer to Louis L'amour Compton is nowhere near the league of Mr. L'amour is a master story teller, Compton rushes from one series of events to the next. Dec 09, Doug Krenzee rated it did not like it. Aug 28, Cindy rated it did not like it. Great premise, good writer. Danny ends up just a device to get through the book, instead of a real character.

This writer usually does better than this. Jul 19, Chez Nash rated it it was amazing. Right on part with Louis L'Amour. Great story and footnotes about various historical references. Oct 01, Joshua Berkov rated it liked it. Not bad for a Western. There were a few too man characters to keep track of, but the action scenes were tastefully described. Feb 21, Midge rated it it was amazing. A fast read that sucks you in and won't let go. Jul 09, Jess Hart rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: This is one of the best books I have ever read!

The heroine is a young woman who takes the law into her own hands to even the score. I read it in one day because I could not put it down. Feb 20, Cristyn Faries rated it it was amazing. I am not a western book fan yet this one was fabulous.

A great book, well written and just about anyone can enjoy it. Nov 15, Erin rated it it was amazing. Pretty much a western series I'd read over and over again And I'm not a huge fan of westerns. Mar 31, Alex rated it it was ok Shelves: Thought the concept was a good but thought that it seemed to drag at parts. Jul 23, Will Welton rated it liked it. Kind of interesting but maybe I just could not get in the mood to read that day. It was well written and had some good places that I enjoyed reading. Jan 20, Blindeducator rated it it was amazing.

It was an easy read. An unexpected twist on vengeance from a teenage girl. You hardly ever read this back in the western days. Nov 18, JennericUser rated it really liked it. I kind of liked it, not having the main character over-think everything or spending multiple chapters in self-analysis especially for a female protagonist , but sometimes it would have been nice to see her thought process a little more too, because she does make several clever plays that come as much as a surprise to the reader as they do to her enemies, but actually that was kind of nice too, so I can't even give that criticism with much conviction.

The only true gripe I can voice is the overestimation of distance traveled by horseback. Danielle regularly covers miles a day on the chestnut mare, which is entirely possible, I've done as much myself in endurance races, but in the s, without modern veterinary care or electrolytes or even a consistent intake of high-nutrient grain, there's no way she would have been able to ride this horse so fast and so far and that's only during daylight hours, not even a full 24 hour cycle like we do in endurance , let alone repeat it for two or three days at a time.
