The Glass Hawk

The main function of this unique instrument, therefore, is to obtain images of extended objects such as nearby galaxies or large nebulae , as well as individual stars and exoplanets.

Open Sunday-Friday 11am-5pm • Saturday 11am-6pm

In order to peek through dust and to detect cooler stars and planets, HAWK-I observes in different parts of the near-infrared spectral range 0. Combined with the superb optical quality of UT4 and the excellent atmospheric conditions often prevailing at Paranal, this allows HAWK-I to obtain amazing quality images — this instrument truly does have the eyes of a hawk. These reference stars correct for the turbulence of the atmosphere over the full field of view.

The images taken with astronomical instruments are always in intensity scale: This image was used, together with many others, to produce the large mosaic of the Carina Nebula [ esoa ]. The authoritative technical specifications as offered for astronomical observations are available from the Science Operation page.

Daryl has big plans for the rolls of slides and scores of hours of moving film he shot while there, including an hour-long documentary on his television program, The Unconventional Traveler Channel 77, Tuesdays at 9 p. And the work is extraordinary: He also brings along a 24mm and a 20mm wide-angle lens for landscapes. The back and front are tough Gorilla Glass, the sides very solid plastic you could easily mistake for aluminium if you don't look too closely. Those sides don't have the cool feel of metal, of course. The finish isn't entirely simple either.

If light catches it at the right angle, you'll see a laser-like beam splaying out from the centre. It's subtle, and we needed to use a spotlight to bring it out more in our photos.

But it is there, giving the EE Hawk another hit of flair. The fingerprint scanner is more important, if anything. It sits on the back and is indented, making finding it with your finger very easy.

You just put your finger here and the Hawk does the rest. It seems a little picky if you don't land your fingerprint dead on the circle, but place it squarely and the scanner works very well. It'll wake your phone up from standby in around a second. The EE Hawk has a sensible, non-flashy 5-inch screen. Resolution is the obvious shortfall.
