Want to quit looking at roman letters and focus on remembering hiragana and katakana? This is the dictionary for you! It goes from English to Japanese and Japanese to English, but without a hint of romaji anywhere. There's also a really nifty center section that includes some of the most common conjugations of Japanese verbals in Japanese-style, so it teaches you about ichi-dan, go-dan, and irregular verbals the way the Japanese understand them not whatever method your current textbook has chosen.

There's also a list of common counters, and other useful lists and charts. Example sentences are also given in the dictionary entries, which I have found very useful for seeing how words are used. Overall, I think this is one of the BEST dictionaries on the market, and I recommend it to anyone who wants the romaji out of their brain so they can focus on truly internalizing the language.
If you're learning Japanese seriously, then it just feels wrong and unnatural to use a romaji dictionary.
So how do you find a middle ground dictionary that is all in Japanese characters not cop-out romaji but is also readable by any beginner student??????? This dictionary, which is practically one of a kind, does that fabulously.

If you always read new words in romaji, your brain will consequently learn them in romaji, making it harder to transition to actual Japanese thinking. Also, it has lots of REAL example sentences written by Japanese teachers, not random westerners to help you understand how a word is actually used.
The only downfall of this awesome-possum dictionary is that it does not have intonation guides: Kodansha is the best brand, and anything by Seiichi Makino is the best. Check it out, and great happiness will ensue: Instead of using it as an aid to solve all your word problems encountered during reading, i use it as a book to increase my Japanese word power, to memorize the words systemically. The dictionary is divided into 2 parts. The first part is Japanese to English and the second English to Japanese.
