When medicine no longer served to fight it, he fought it with his emotions. It was a struggle. He refused to have anything to do with it in the beginning. And when he eventually brought himself to speak to his blindness his words were bitter. But he kept on speaking and the words slowly changed into words of resignation and tolerance and acceptance… and, one day, very much to his own surprise, they became words of friendliness… and love.
His vision, of course, was lost forever. But how attractive his face became! When the Zen master attained enlightenment he wrote the following lines to celebrate it: I draw water from the well! After enlightenment nothing really changes. The tree is still a tree; people are just what they were before and so are you. You may continue to be as moody or even-tempered, as wise or foolish. The one difference is that you see things with a different eye. You are more detached from it all now. And your heart is full of wonder. Contemplation is different from ecstasy in that ecstasy leads to withdrawal.
The enlightened contemplative continues to chop wood and draw water from the well. Contemplation is different from the perception of beauty in that the perception of beauty a painting or a sunset produces aesthetic delight, whereas contemplation produces wonder — no matter what it observes, a sunset or a stone.
This is the prerogative of children. They are so often in a state of wonder. So they easily slip into the Kingdom. It was fun to read a chapter and a time and live with it for a while before moving on. Happiness is in the future. Right here and now you are happy and you do not know it because your false beliefs and your distorted perceptions have got you caught up in fears, anxieties, attachments, conflicts, guilt and a host of games that you are programmed to play.
If you would see through this you would realize that you are happy and do not know it. So it is no longer the real world that you interact with and love but a world created by your head. Also, when compared to Awareness, I found he was less direct when talking about God in this volume. He does refer to the Kingdom of God and Christ, but he also refers to entities such as "Nature", so it's difficult to tell where he's coming from at certain points. I also do believe, and this applied to Awareness as well, that he takes detachment a bit too far in some instances. And this could very possibly be from my own misinterpretation of what he's saying.
It can sometimes feel like he's advocating a life of such solitude that it comes off as self-protective to make sure you can't be hurt. But, in general, his perspectives would benefit people the world over.

However this book will be appealing to this audience and also those who, although know deep in their gut what love is, find this an affirming read on love. It's a small book and great to carry around on the commutes into work.

I probably need to read this again - because of the size, this book came along with me for waits in airport terminals, a place and time when I might take offense because I'd spent hundreds of dollars to visit people I love and value. But in taking a step back and taking a look at my "attachments", I can see the author's point.
