It's mainly centred around the US over the last years, but with references to British banking and some European history.
It starts with some basic definitions of what money is, and very quickly moves onto why the US currency the Federal Reserve Note is actually an unconstitutional, almost fraudulent replacement for money. Most people don't realise that the Federal Reserve is actually a private bank, that derives its profit by enslaving the US population in government debt.
Beyond this basic fact, Gause tells the story about how this system was manipulated into existence, and what the implications are.
The Secret World of Money by Andrew M. Gause
He uses it to explain why the vast tax income never makes it to public services which are also private institutions that benefit the bankers. But, the significance of the banking history pales into comparison to Gause's research into the political networks behind the manipulation and debasement of money. The same names come up over and over: You have to join up very few dots in this book to realise what strings are worth pulling today, and who has the pulling end.
Possibly the most disturbing section for me was to discover exactly why is being played out so accurately. The structure of The Secret World of Money is continuous question-answer; there aren't even any chapter divisions. This makes it a fast, page-turning read. I'm total noob and the explanations, appreciate it. Can't really do the second bit with the 10 auctions a day cap I believe a day, I know I tried once and was greeted with an error message that I'd posted the maximum number of auctions that day. And I only had like active listings at the time, as my prior ones had sold earlier that day.
The most valuable items right now are 3-pip dungeon gear and the rare items you get out of Agarthan Caches this game's lockbox. You're limited on the amount of dungeons you can run each day, as well.
Every limit in SWL is character-specific. The best way to work around them if you want to farm is by getting more characters 1, Aurum per slot.

You'll get more dungeon keys, more daily challenges, more items you can sell each day. I've found three characters to be plenty for my farming needs. Aurum is shared account-wide, so you can exchange money between characters via Aurum. That's like work instead of playing a fun game. I am already busy enough gearing up with 1 character. Farming's fun to some. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. Log in or sign up in seconds. Submit a new link.

It will take you longer to gear up for end game dungeons and raids, but still possible for free Not really important, as you can get everything in the game without money, but it will take you more time to do so.
There is even a currency exchange in the game where you can use in-game money to buy this premium currency that would otherwise take real money to purchase. In sum, you have a way to get premium currency using "fake" in-game money, and you can experience everything for free, but expect it to take a little more time to do so.
The gring won't bother me as long as it turns out fun. I have done WoW grind for years. I have down Diablo 2 and 3 grind for years and recently been on the PoE grind.
ANDREW GAUSE RELEASES NEW EDITION OF BEST-SELLING BOOK “THE SECRET WORLD OF MONEY”
The game is really two separate games mashed together, a single player story game and a MMO gear grind treadmill. You absolutely don't have to spend any money at all to enjoy the former[1], but you'll really want to spend money to enjoy the latter. Depending on player skill you might need a bit of grind at the end to do the last few zones. Patron would speed that grind up but by the time get this far you'll know whether you are invested enough in the story to spend any money. If you just want to see the group content and experience the story the dungeons have "story" modes that can be experienced and enjoyed in a relatively easy, low pressure way as compared to most mmo experiences.
However this is entirely possible if you just want the story. Story mode makes all dungeons and likely the raids eminently doable with zone-appropriate levels and gear. Money only speeds up the grind, and the grind only exists to make further grinding more efficient. In this regard at least, SWL has been more than fair.

I don't care about grind at all as long as the game ends up being enjoyable and fun. I am no newbie when it comes to grinds. I just want them to be fun is all.

I feel going a lot faster around maps with Sprint VI, and passing through mobs quite faster with anima-touched weapons no need to keep healing. And you need to pay to get these soon. Patron is enough of a boost and 15 bucks a month is the old-school acceptable way of playing MMOs. You can be a free-loader as well, but expect to progress slower then most. As most people have said, you can definitely do the content without dumping money into the game - particularly if you are more interested in the story and missions rather than getting to end game dungeons.
However, the dungeons have an easier "story mode" that is accessible without needing a lot of high end gear, so you can still experience them.

You can still do end game dungeons without paying, there's just a gear grind required first, and then a limit on how much loot you can get from dungeons per day as you have a daily allowance of keys to open dungeon loot chests, if you want more you have to buy them. You can access all of the paid perks through the in game auction house to use MoF in game currency to purchase Aurum real cash paid currency from other players.
However, this requires a significant grind or smart AH play to get a lot of MoF. I am installing it now.
Hopefully I can talk a friend or two into playing also that way I have some people to play with. If you want to catch up to them and play at that level, then yes, real money is important. But there are plenty of other people the majority?
