Faith Through Fire: Rwanda and Me
The sociologist Peter Berger, who notes that the modern Pentecostal faith was launched by an African-American preacher in Los Angeles in the early twentieth century, has described Pentecostalism as "the fastest growing religious movement in history. Now, he says, many of the new churches are being founded by "enthusiastic young preachers" of local origin. Many Rwandan Pentecostal churches offer their parishioners job training and business classes.
She now attends services in her local Pentecostal church at least two times a week. In Pentecostalism you can praise God the way you want. You pray the way you feel it. That emphasis on shared emotion including plenty of rousing music and preaching helps to explain why so many Rwandans are drawn to the Pentecostal message.

Rose Mukakimenyi, 37, lost much of her extended family in the genocide, prompting an intense spiritual search. When we pray, I feel we are like a family. Her friend, year-old Thitien Nsabumukiza, has a dramatic conversion story of his own involving an elaborate, dreamlike vision of his Pentecostal mother, who desperately wanted him to join the faith. Now he works as a deacon at his local church, leading a member prayer group and doing his best to woo new believers — a stark contrast, he says, to the days when all he wanted was to take revenge on those who had orchestrated the killing of so many of his fellow Tutsis: For those who survived an event that claimed the lives of so many others, talk of "rebirth" or "resurrection" has a powerful immediacy.

I was baptized and became a Pentecostal. The Pentecostal Church itself is hardly immune to the temptations of power and wealth, as some of the recent scandals within its leadership demonstrate. And the appalling actions of the spiritual leaders who participated in the horrors of including, indeed, some Protestant pastors should serve as a reminder that the religiously minded are also just as prey to human frailty as anyone else. Yet one suspects that many Rwandans will continue to turn to religion as a source of consolation and community.

In November of , I had the most incredible experience of my life. Going on the trip was the fruit of years of prayers, tears, being immersed in other cultures, and faith.
All glory be to God for the miraculous way in which He paved the way for the Rwanda trip to happen!
Faith Through Fire: Rwanda and Me
I had been interested in mission work for many years. There are many great organizations serving the material needs of people. This is very important and a tenet of our faith. From sea to sea, and the islands in between, people are yearning for Christ. People are literally dying every day without having heard the Gospel. Not only that, people are living lives without purpose.
Are they forgivable?
They are living life without hope. They are eating the lie that so many societies feed that there is no God, or that God is irrelevant. They have no idea of why they are here on this earth, Who has created them and loves them and desires to spend a joyful eternity with Him. The ache for the Lord and the need for healing is present in every nation. It is my love for the people of every nation and my love for Christ that compelled me to seek out mission work. As a charismatic Catholic, I was seeking other Catholics on fire for the Kingdom.
I also prayed that one day I would have the opportunity to go on a mission.

My heart ached to be able to share that love with my brothers and sisters in other nations. In , I attended my first Gathering. Each Gathering has been miraculous in its own way.
