These people were able to identify their experience as being of a spiritual nature by discovering the works of Grof, Jung, Joseph Campbell, Weir Perry etc. By doing so, they were able to see their experience in spiritual and growth terms and integrate the experience into their lives. Others who were initially diagnosed as bipolar or with some other mental illness and were put on medication were able to find their way to these sites and be given an alternative view of their experience and therefore a different life. When I started this essay, I had the view that bipolar disorder is a life-long illness and spiritual emergence a totally different entity.
