Lions Heaven
We had breakfast and lunch - both delicious and very reasonably priced! I think this Park may be somewhat over-rated, though in all fairness we did see lions, and that was the principal reason for visiting. That in itself made the trip worthwhile.

The administration was aggressive and generally rather unpleasant - camera permits are expensive at INR per visit i. Some of the administrative staff were OK but some very aggressive and unpleasant in pursuing the camera permits. We had great trouble from one guide "sneaking" on us that one member of the group without a permit had taken 3 pictures, so we were led back to the administration block to pay the INR Oddly enough, cameras in mobile 'phones seemed to be of no interest to the guards. There was no courtesy or humour. We had much vile spitting from one driver, and were screeched at by one guard on the entrance who did not believe that we had bought enough camera permits we had!
There was a lot of laborious signing-in to be done even if pre-booked. Guides and drivers were very variable, some were excellent, doing their very best to point out wildlife, but some really just 'going through the motions'. The jeeps are primitive no roll-over bars for example and whilst some were fine, some were a bit smaller and had poor leg-room obstructed by bruising protruding metal bits. You get a driver, jeep and guide allocated so have no choice as far as we could tell.
We had a Gujarati speaker in our group who told us that in response to knowing that we had not, at that stage, seen a lion, said "well show them a video". We were pleased to see a couple of young adult male lions, though we wondered the extent to which they were "red in tooth and claw" as a guide called up a tracker who, on payment of INR could lead us to lions, which plodded slowly past the jeep. Nice to see them.
It raised the suspicion that these cold be wild lions that had known the tracker since birth and so were relatively friendly. On another occasion we saw a full-grown lion in the distance. There was a lot of other creatures to see - deer, birds, mongoose etc. No-one would give us a clue about the chances of seeing lions, but maybe one in three "safaris" would give an idea. Certainly don't expect to see one every trip.

All in all, a nice enough trip, somewhat marred by the attitude of the park staff. The tourists are not some kind of nuisance, but the people who bring in appreciable amounts of money. I give four stars because of the wildlife, and recommend it on those grounds.
Seeing a lion in the wild was a magical experience. This is truely a Kingdom of Asiatic lions. Below are some highlights 1. We could see 3 leopards and 1 lion in wild in Gir National park. In this way , our trip was successful. Gir interpretation zone , located at Develia is again a good place to visit since locating a lion is a cake walk here. Travelling in a meter gauge train should also be a remarkable experience as 20km stretch of Sasan-Junagadh route pass through the forest.
