Francisco de Zurbaran - A Short Illustrated Biography

He was an artist who was representative of the Counter-reformation. His style evolved to resemble the Italian Mannerist masters, and became less similar to the realism of Velazquez.

The hallmark of his compositions is his chiaroscuro modelling with sharply contrasting tones. He died in Madrid in Devotional painting based on the Marian Litany, a rogation to the Virgin which was said in the early years of the 17th century on the feasts dedicated to the Madonna. It is remarkable for its simplicity, the sensation of quietude it transmits and the astonishing naturalism of the image. The artist shows his skill here in producing simple compositions centring on the study of expression, the reproduction of textures and the interplay of whites and greys.
