The Education of a Modern Poker Player

If you have a problem of any kind just email us: John Billingham is an English maths professor, and a keen player of games. In the summer of he discovered online poker and was hooked.

The education of a modern poker player

A year later he decided to trick a couple of impressionable young poker pros, Austrian Thomas Tiroch TwiceT and Romanian Emanuel Cinca EmanuelC16 , into teaching him how to play poker on the promise of writing a book with them. Little did he know what he was letting himself in for. Over the course of this entertaining book, TT and Manu explain how to beat these small stakes games, aided and abetted by JB, and illustrate all the important concepts with real example hands. There is a particular focus on Fast Fold Games, such as Rush and Zoom, in which JB eventually became a specialist, and practical explanations of how to take advantage of weak players in this format.

The first and third parts, the longest two by a considerable margin, are the real heart of the book. This is the process by which Cinca and Tiroch try to improve how Billingham plays, although most of this is done from their student's perspective.

Review of The Education of a Modern Poker Player

The authors critique Billingham's play, provide hand examples of their own that include their thought processes, describe the use of tools such as HUDs that can provide poker insight to online players, and provide instruction on general and specific poker theory. Their student also describes his thought process as he improves his game, including his breakthroughs and continued shortcomings.

The second part, titled "Interlude", is unusual.

The Myth of Poker Talent - A first look

It contains some good material, but it really doesn't fit very well in the book. In this part Billingham discusses such topics as game theory and computer poker. He also discusses a strategy for playing five card draw poker online. This is fine, but it seems like it would be better presented in stand alone articles or in some other book. I was pleased to read it, and in many ways it was my favorite part of the book because it's the sort of thing that doesn't get discussed in the poker literature much, but I suspect a lot of other readers will find it superfluous.

Book Review of The Education of a Modern Poker Player

The book contains some general poker advice, and the authors do recommend that poker players learn other poker games, but aside from the diversion discussing draw, all the poker examples come from online NLH. I expect the book would be at least somewhat interesting to live game and tournament players, but some material, such as the discussions of HUDs, would have limited utility. I like a lot of the material in the book.

I could argue with the authors on some of their suggestions, but I generally agree with them on the substantial issues. The advice given by the successful players reflects their skill appropriately. The question is, who is the target audience?

  4. The book is written as an instruction guide to someone who is a bright, experienced online player who is either not winning or not winning very much even at lower stakes NLH. If one exhibits the same shortcomings as the author, then this certainly would be a good book to read. However, I'm not sure a this is a large demographic, and even if it is, there's no guarantee that the book's reader will have the same level of experience as well as the same shortcomings as the narrator, and b that this is the first, main, or even eventual book toward which such a player will turn.
