The Affair

If there are three sides to every story - his, hers, and the truth - this initial outing suggests that The Affair will offer an entertaining look at at least two of those sides, even if ultimately, the third is unknowable. Most notably, the cast clicks. West and Wilson, both so great on The Wire and Luther, respectively, are perfect here.

People do terrible things to each other on TV every Sunday night. I'm more than ready for a show willing to admit that the worst possible behavior is quite often perfectly legal. The Affair looks to be a bit more cerebral than some of Showtime's other star shows. That makes it no less compelling.

It's engrossing and it's definitely a case of the story being more than the sum of its parts. The Affair is the story of an affair in its most intense, psychologically-taxing, emotionally draining, inglorious reality. The alternate takes are at times almost comically disparate, zapping them of credibility. Alison comes across as either too aggressive or too fragile; Noah is too devoted to his family or too ready to cast them aside.

A sleek drama that features impeccable acting and impeccable storytelling.

It is told in two main parts and the same events in each episode are shown from their two different perspectives- for example part one may be from Noah's perspective and show their initial meeting and part two would be the same event but from Alison's point of view.

Here we get to see the differences and similarities between their own personal experience of the same event, ranging from large differences in how they see a certain situation eg one was completely unaware of any attraction between them but the other may have felt love at first sight etc to small, some could say irrelevant details like what words were used or what someone was wearing at the time.

At first it's interesting just to point these out. She saw herself wearing jeans and a vest top, he saw her wearing a flimsy summer dress and subtle differences like that but then you begin to add these to the context of the event being portrayed. He sees her as being flirtatious where she sees her behaviour as merely polite but friendly etc.

For anyone interested in the psychology of social interaction something I personally am will find this aspect fascinating. On a more overt note you have the story, whether it's a love story or story of a couple's unfaithfulness to their spouses and their "reasons" behind their affair does depend somewhat on your own perspective and will form some of what relationships or bonds you build with the characters.

The characters are the major plus for this show. The four central characters: Alison, Noah, Cole and Helen this does widen out in further seasons but begins, and somewhat remains faithful no pun intended to the original four are exceptionally written, complex, multi-dimensional and relatable. With this kind of story you may think that the end is where the affair is discovered and the consequences have run their course and you find out what exactly happened that the police are investigating but this show proves that there is plenty of life in the story still left to discover.

While it did take a little bit of a push in season three to continue now you know what happened and how it all played out season four has proven that it was definitely worth sticking with it. Can the "guilty" party be forgiven?

Movies in Theaters

Can friendships or relationships still remain from what appears to be only the rubble of their lives? If so what kind of relationships? I am definitely looking forward to seeing where they go with season five after the big event of season four.

It's almost like they continue to change the show completely ie with the exception of how the affair altered the people who experienced it the show hasn't really been about the affair since season two ended but it is still as good as before, if not better. At its very core this show is about people.
