Maigret et les témoins récalcitrants (French Edition)
When the difference reaches 6 points, a choice has to be made for the value: Otherwise said, when, for example, Simenon writes in February, " Maigret and the Loner" , where the action takes place in August, is the author nostalgic for the summer heat of the previous year, or is he longing to see the return of this season while living in a wintry February? Happily, this difficulty doesn't do much harm to the analysis, since such extremes are rare; and further, shouldn't we set aside PRE , where the action is far back in time Indeed, "Maigret's First Case" is itself a sort of " Memoir ", told in an indirect form.
In the great majority of cases, the difference doesn't exceed 1 or 2 points see the next graph which makes the results fairly weak.
We recognize, considering this graph, that for the great majority of cases, Simenon uses a relationship which I would characterize as "a short time" between the month of writing and the month of the action. Otherwise said, the month of the writing and the story are very close in more than half the novels.
By contrast, it seems more difficult to extract a tendency in Simenon for either memory of the past or delighting in the future However, if we divide the analysis according to the three cycles of the corpus, we note that: For the Gallimard cycle, no tendency can be found A hypothetical explanation might be the greater proportion of cases in this cycle which take place in springtime, while the majority of the novels of this cycle were written in the winter.
This illustrates a tendency in Simenon, although he writes in winter, to want to find once more the fine season, so he can put his Chief Inspector into an ideal situation of "beautiful weather" So Simenon shows a tendency to place himself more and more in a perspective of "distance", whether forwards or backwards, with regard to the time of writing, the present being less and less the "carrier" for the novelist's imagination A Visit to the Inspectors' Office "He could have called Lucas by phone also, but, when it was one of his inspectors, he preferred to get up from his chair, to go and open the door which communicated with their office.
It was not to check on them, but in a way, to take the temperature of the house. We can access this office either from the hallway, or from Maigret's office, where one of the two doors opens directly into the Inspectors' room. I'd like to read this book on Kindle Don't have a Kindle?
