Die Vergessenen Schriften 9: Die Legenden der Albae (German Edition)

The art that is so beautiful that its deadly. A great fantasy edition and looking forward to the next Alfar legend!
Fantasy readers looking for something different. Several genuinely surprising twists that serve real purpose in the book, rather than shock value Characters are shown in full, flaws and all, making them more memorable and likable Does not disclose full account of the history of the races all at once, giving enough to explain the situation without overloading the reader None of the characters show obvious signs of 'plot armor' being kept alive because the plot demands it , though they do escape some nasty situations, the reasoning is almost always sound Follows the general archetype of a mature fantasy plot enough to entice readers, but deviates from it to keep it interesting The Bad: Due to a translation from German, the original language, there are some grammatical errors, and some sentences that just plain don't make sense out of context Caphalor and Sinthoras follow the 'people with opposing viewpoints forced on a journey together and grow to understand each other's perspective' stereotype There are some instances of rather graphic descriptions of acts of cruelty and violence, most perpetrated by the Alfar, that may discourage further reading; however, you need merely understand the general idea of what happens to follow the plot, so you can skip the gory details without becoming lost SPOILER TERRITORY What I liked: Caphalor is presented as the moderate I use this word very liberally here - moderate compared to the other Aflar , but still possesses the implied inherent Alfar cruelty, as shown by his treatment of the obonogo unsure of the spelling - I read the book a fair while ago; the skinwalker Sinthoras is shown as self-entitled, arrogant, pretty boy very early on, specifically with his treatment of Raleeha, however, there are subtleties that imply the base semblances of repressed emotions characteristic of someone who represses their emotions to conform to a role, such as how he would have killed Raleeha, but didn't, and his carefully disguised fear of the again, forgot the name - the imps with the poisoned darts The Alfar are shown as superior beings as elves tend to be , but have definite limits, though not clearly defined.
What I didn't like: Raleeha is the stereotypical mortal girl with an obvious case of Stockholm syndrome, and as a good portion of her character development revolved around her devotion to Sinthoras, that portion of her story was dull to me though I did enjoy learning about her brother and such The mysterious power Sinthoras and Caphalor go to find turns on them, always wanting for more, forcing them to deceive the being into helping them. Though I do appreciate Heitz introducing something that is blatantly leagues more powerful than Caphalor and Sinthoras, the extremely powerful being that wants more and more and forces the main characters to now somehow contend with the foe that necessitated the being's aid in the first place AND the being itself, and still being shown as coming out on top, is one of those things that is good the first few times it's used and quickly loses its appeal, like an overplayed song on the radio.
Her character could have been an amazing one with layers of depth and an extreme role in the plot, not to mention the implications of their being many more of her kind, potentially in an organized group. However, she got almost no development other than Caphalor and Sinthoras' obviously biased views of her based on her species. It is justified, because she does literally steal the body parts of their fallen friends, but it only presented one side of a potentially amazing character, either a surprising ally against great odds you empathize with or a terrifying villain you love to hate.
I don't hold it against Heitz yet, as I haven't read the remainder of the series, and it might be addressed later, but I sill wish she had more development. Another excellent Heitz fantasy, full of vivid imagery some very gory and action. It leaves me wanting to see the alfar's progress into the next stories following.
A real page turner. I didn't know such evil characters could be revered! Jun 12, KIeran rated it it was amazing. I really really enjoyed this book.
Gerechter Zorn (Die Legenden der Albae, #1) by Markus Heitz
I also enjoyed being given the whole "flipside of the coin" with this book. Also gives backstory to some crucial parts in the Dwarves saga. I'm absolutely salivating for the next book in this very original series by Marc Turner. An absolute page flipper! Jun 11, Olivia Joyce rated it it was amazing. I do so wish this book had a better rating! Open Preview See a Problem?

As you can see, this book took me awhile to read. Part of this is due to less time to read changed my going to work routine, which resulted in less reading time and part of this is due to the slow progression of the book. With that said, this book had THE most interesting ending and tying up of loose ends ever!!! The War of the Dwarves 4. The Revenge of the Dwarves 5. The Fate of the Dwarves 8.

A new book yet to come With this knowledge the series becomes that much more interesting and makes me want to read it all again in the correct order, and all at once, to understand it all a bit better. Well orchestrated by Markus Heitz.

Mar 15, Cornelia rated it really liked it. Although this is the last installment of Heitz' Albae series, it's definitely not the last time we heard about Albae in his writing.
