This is an odd, memorable and I would argue, important collection of horror stories. They're not all masterpieces, and a handful are pretty conventional Victorian era ghost tales.
But the others make up for this, being quite original, shockingly grotesque, and downright scary. The best of these stories have the feel of something that was written as "art for arts sake," without seeking to please the crowd.

Indeed, this is often more transgressive than your normal classic era English ghost story f This is an odd, memorable and I would argue, important collection of horror stories. Indeed, this is often more transgressive than your normal classic era English ghost story fare. The themes in these stories are often fairly typical, about men who become fascinated by haunted locales, and yet how Lewis handles the way that the horror intrudes into normal life feels quite original. Lewis displays a great imagination and a pretty dark one at that.
The last author I recall reading from this same general era with this level of originality was Stefan Grabinski and his wonderfully unpredictable tales. Grabinski often combined the grotesque and sexual, Lewis does at times too. He gets at the heart of horror like few writers I've read. Because these stories are so unpredictable and grotesque, the writing has an almost modern feel to it and the collection is a lot of fun to read. Despite the age of these stories, the one's at their best gave me more shivers than most things I read today. Two other stories are more predictable, but enjoyable; "The Chords Of Chaos" has a neat theme and "The Meerschaum Pipe" is a fun, gory story even if it's conclusion is easily seen.
Lost Keep - Very interesting story and very original, I don't think I've read anything quite like it frankly.
An uneasy moment for women fuels a boom in science fiction
It has a feel of a weird tale from the Victorian era, yet it's willing to take chances and be pretty grotesque too. A man inherits a family heirloom which has a strange power which he uses to cruelly to accumulate a fortune. Hybrid - Another very original idea here, the theme is so strange it borders on the humorously absurd, and yet it's quite eerie and horrific as well. Some very effective moments.

A man is convinced that a wild nightmare about a hybrid creature is something to which he owes a debt from a previous life. The Tower Of Moab - I would have liked to have seen a more of where this idea could go, but it's fairly effective as it is. A traveling salesman stops off in a town and becomes fascinated by a weird tower that was begun, but never completed.

The Child - Wow, I really loved this. It's got great pacing, atmosphere and place, but it's also just plain old scary. It's a rare experience for me, but this one really had me on the edge of my seat, the scariest in the bunch. A man traveling through rural England stops off in a small village where he hears a tale of a cursed wood and it's dark history. The Dirk - This is a far more conventional story of ghostly revenge, also among the shortest in the collection.
A man murders his brother to inherit the family estate, but is haunted by his spirit. The Chords Of Chaos - This is another story along more conventional lines, although less so than the previous one. A medium is able to go into a trance and play music which causes visions in those who listen. The Meerschaum Pipe - This story is pretty predictable, and yet it's gruesomeness and theme of possession has a certain potency that was admirable.
The ending is a powerfully morbid one.
Tales of the Uneasy
A man buys the estate of a serial killer and soon the killings in the neighborhood resume. A pilot describes a creature that sprang on board the plane of a friend of his who recently died in a crash. The Iron Swine - An interesting little story, tentatively connected to the previous one, but is one of the least interesting in the book. A man recounts the history of a seemingly haunted airplane.
Animate In Death - An excellent story, providing a number of gruesome shudders. It starts out eerie enough, but reaches an effective pitch of horror by the end, even if the spiritual explanation makes little sense.
A man invites his friend to his houseboat to help exorcise the spirit of someone recently drowned there. This story starts with a subtle unease, but the supernatural becomes quite bold here. A man intends to kidnap his estranged wife and punish her on a spot that is reputed to be haunted. He has a strange encounter there while preparing the apparatus for her punishment. Jul 16, Paul rated it really liked it Shelves: Lewis could infuse even the more on the surface prosaic or predictable stories of haunting or possession with ingenious twists and some nightmarish, viscerally disturbing imagery that stays etched in your mind.
