A Journey to Disgrace - Part-Two-of-Three
In contrast if you were rich then prison could have all the comforts of home right down to a four poster bed if you paid enough for the privilege! There were a couple of coincidences in The Disgrace of Kitty Grey that were a little hard to believe but that didn't stop me thoroughly enjoying the story. Kitty was lucky enough to find some supportive friends who made life at Newgate prison a little more bearable for her and Betsy.
I think anyone with even a slight interest in history is going to love any of Mary Hooper's books and this one is no exception. I can't wait to see what interesting topic she introduces next. Dec 07, Serendipity Reviews rated it really liked it. Originally published on www. Every book she writes is so thoroughly researched, you feel like the author has magical powers allowing her to visit the periods in history she writes so realistically about.
During this novel, we are transported back to the time of Napoleon and find ourselves in a beautiful, idyllic country setting. With the love of Will, the ferryman, she is content and looks forward to spending the future with him. This book is full of fascinating contrasts. As the book progresses you begin to contrast life in the country with life in London. London comes across as grey and depressing, as Kitty struggles to survive. As each day passes, her situation just gets worse until she ends up in Newgate Prison, the lowest she can go.
I loved the descriptions in this book. From country life to London life, you get an excellent impression of both. Newgate Prison has always intrigued me. The conditions they lived under were appalling; the lack of places to sleep, no opportunities for cleanliness and very little food, yet if you had money you could pay to make your conditions better. This shows clearly the unfairness of society during this period in history. People were jailed for the least little thing. If someone burnt a chair these days, I doubt an eyebrow would be lifted, yet in those days you were thrown in jail, facing the possibility of being whipped or put in the stocks.
I wanted to see what would happen if Kitty continued on the route she was originally destined to take. How her life would have turned out if the events of the final pages had not occurred. On reviewing the book now, I wonder if the author might take that idea and use it for a future book and we might see what happens when someone actually takes the journey that Kitty nearly embarked on. Jan 26, Whispering Words And I love how her books are full of fact as well as fiction!
The Disgrace of Kitty Grey is the story of a young diary maid. Working for a rich lord, she lives a nice but sheltered country life, and often dreams of the day when her sweet heart Will can finally save enough money to propose to her. However things turn upside down for Kitty when Will disappears without as much as a goodbye. Certain that he has gone to London to find his fortune, Kitty is furious that he has left her alone to care for his four year old sister.
Therefore, when her mistress asks her to go to London, Kitty jumps at the chance — taking Wills sister along with her. Yet things go downhill for Kitty the moment she arrives in City. Robbed, penniless and with a child to care for, despair hits her when she realises her chances of finding Will are miniscule. Soon branded a thief and thrown in prison, Kitty is only a reassured in her thoughts that things cannot get worse, only the do.
While I thought it got off to a slow beginning, the story really picks up the pace the moment Kitty arrives in London. Kitty is a timid character but she is smart and kind hearted. Set in Regency England, I was also shocked to learn how unfair and corrupt the justice system was back then. I found it particularly interesting how harsh people were to Kitty - simply because they thought she had had a child out of wedlock, but it was also fascinating to read about the state and affairs of English prisons. So overall a most engaging book and one I truly enjoyed! Historically accurate but not at all boring, it will take you on a journey through the past and give you real insight into the period.
The Disgrace of Kitty Grey is charming, insightful and ripe with history. A very nice read - 4 stars! But then Will disappears after talking about going to London to make money and Kitty takes an opportunity to go to London for her mistress and look for him while she is there. But London is bigger and more dangerous than she imagines possible. The story starts off quite pastoral, with a Kitty being hard working but happy, with plenty of the real detail I love from Mary Hooper about how a dairy would work and what gentry of that time would be up to.
But quickly we are taken to the capital. The London depicted in this novel is very Dickensian. Mary Hooper never shies away from depicting the true reality of life and her research is also spot on. Her prose really gave me an impression of a dirty, cold London where existing is a struggle.
I don't want to spoil the story for you, but Kitty's journey once there is far from smooth but I was with her every step of the way. The character of Kitty is someone you can really feel for and connect with. At no point was I in doubt of her motivations for her actions and she felt like a whole, real person.
My heart went out to her and I was very invested in her having a happy ending! I had read some of Mary's blog posts while she was researching thsis book so could anticipate some parts of the story line but it didn't spoil it for me at all, instead it gave me insight into why she chose some of Kitty's destinations and some of the events she experiences.
Mary Hooper includes historical notes at the end of each novel for anyone wanting to know more about what she has written but haven't read her blog. Fans of Mary's previous work won't be disappointed by this read and if you haven't read her books already I'd recommend you do! However, I must tell that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. The best part of this book was the plot. It was so entertaining that I had trouble putting this book down. It was depicted in a great way in my opinion and was pivotal when discussing this era.
However, even though the plot was perfect, the book did lack certain things in my opinion. One of the things I missed was the emotional aspect of the story. Another issue I found when reading the book is the language. Kitty was a milkmaid but at times was speaking as if she were a lady of high class. Oct 23, L. Hooper is good, there's no doubt about it, but I'm not sure The Disgrace of Kitty Grey is her best work. Such a statemement thoug I love Mary Hooper. Such a statemement though reflects the Scale of Hooper patent pending and therefore Kitty is still a really solid, engrossing book that I did enjoy.
I don't think it's packaged right. The cover and blurb didn't gel for me at all with the text. It's an intriguing book really but not one that is wholly reflected by that cover and blurb. So what is The Disgrace of Kitty Grey? It is a beautifully researched and written novel, featuring country life and London in and in lovely detail both. It is also my first readyourwayaroundtheUK book so yay for that.

This story gives real insight into the unfairness of the justice system at the time. Kitty finds herself in an impossible situation and facing horrendous charges which are escalated due to the fact that everyone assumes she is an unmarried mother. It completely fascinated me to see what happened and felt me wanting to know more.
A book which I would really recommend highly. It does exactly what I think historical fiction should do in that it gives a real insight into a historical time period without overburdening the reader with boring detail and therefore keeping the reader really engaged and fascinated with the story. It's a period which interests me, and so little of the factual background was unfamiliar to me although I had not heard of the underground cows before! The ended strained my credulity a little; it wasn't impossible, just a bit improbable, but nevertheless I enjoyed the book and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, particularly to teens inrterested in history or law. Loved the bit about the tableau in the beginning! Unfortunately, however, after Kitty went to London the story like her fortunes went rapidly downhill. While I'm not disputing that the events in the novel could well have happened in that era - as a law student, I know something about the justice system of the period - as a reader I found myself increasingly frustrated first with Kitty's lack of sense in her handling of the situation and second with the story's unrelenting negativity. There's a difference between plot-driving conflict and sheer character abuse, and I'm not sure Mary Hooper quite knows where the line is! The fact that bad things kept happening to Kitty one after the other was itself difficult to accept, and it also made the happily-ever-after of the ending seem even more unlikely, such that I simply couldn't sustain my suspension of disbelief long enough to enjoy the book.
Well-written, well-characterised and excellently researched, but unfortunately the narrative implausibility of the plot let it down. Two stars from me. The character of Kitty is very likeable. She's a good girl so her desperate plight was distressing in places. Told from Kitty's perspective, it is a riches to rags tale in which Kitty goes from being a well-respected milkmaid, to a destitute penniless girl on the streets of London. There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database. Gives me all kinds of tingles and shivers. Truly one of my favourite couple ever. Their partnership just quakes deeply in my heart. They faced so much trials and tribulations from la familia and Cosa Nostra. They deserved their happy ending. Yes it was hard. But their love was deep and it could face anything. No matter how deep and bloody the streets were, they showed they are stronger together.

Everything is coming to a head and it was glorious to read. I fell even more in love with John and Siena. She was his life raft in the middle of stormy seas and he was the reason she did everything possible to get into his arms again. I loved seeing their relationship grow, seeing her remind John of the life he wanted to live and what he needed to do to stick to that. I loved that John's relationship with his family was better, that he put effort into building what bridges he'd burned before back up and seeing the best in his family.
Siena was the definition of ride or die in this book. There was plenty of action, plotting, and violence. Plenty of sexy scenes, and glimpses into other family members' lives, the good and the bad of it. This book has me anxiously awaiting Andino's story. Mental health needs to be looked as a condition that needs constant monitoring not something that should be kept in the closet and shamed. In order to help people we have to pull it out of the dark and knock out those bad connotations that come with mental issues so they ask for help. I know her family did her wrong, but she just seemed not to have any feelings about their demise.
I just thought there would be some throw back from that. She loves John and she is so queued into his ups and downs and helps him. She reminds me of Cross. She is the ultimate stand by your man! Andio is so hard to love sometimes. He just doesn't like to explain himself and because of that he causes more problems along the way. He did with Cross and Catherine and with John and Siena. His possible stand at times could be considered for his own gains, but he still stood firm.

Allow me to convey , however, how beautifully written the story between John and Siena unfolds. Scenes in this installment will force you into a fetal position crying your eyes out. The suffering is so palpable I could hardly remain still. As John snd Siena continue to grow individually and as a unit, outside forces continue to wreak havoc on possible harmony.

The flaunting of traditional expectations placed both families in a position where their options were quickly diminishing. Patience and precision timing held the key to John and Siena being able to be together. My mind accepted it but my heart was another matter altogether. And wait they did, I was silently pleading all along for the tide to change sooner rather than later. Siena is the wildcard in Disgrace, with her living on the edge by taking one day at a time.
At times her choices were reckless, in some instances she was the angel of mercy. Taking every opportunity to ease the bitterness her mother inflicted upon her younger sisters amplified the danger she put herself in for all the right reasons. While her motivation was admirable, her actions meant she was skating on thin ice. Unexpected twists in the plot and the personal challenges the characters faced were what made this story stand out.
Friendships and family dynamics are strained as the fractions between families are strained to breaking point. Loyalty and Disgrace brought together an unlikely couple who believed love would carry them beyond the boundaries that kept them apart. Another great romance from Bethany-Kris! Disgrace picks up right where we left off in book two, I had no idea how this duo was going to move forward with what happened last book. The shocking This was a fantastic ending to a suspenseful, steamy and criminally good duet. The shocking death of a leader and John dealing with his personal health, I was expecting a lot of emotional ups and downs.
And boy was I right and then some. Siena and John never really catch a break, Siena's brothers pick up after their father, her mother is a ruthless and heartless women whom just like her sons treat Siena harshly every chance they get. But crazy enough, her family enemy has taken her in, more like a spy but since she is John's her value is high. John comes back to an emotional pull from his family, he doesn't like what Siena is involved in and she is in constant danger, which triggers Johns temper and then some.
Their story concludes, but along the way they are dealt with some extremely shocking, emotional, scary moments. I wasn't sure who was going to survive and I had no idea the twist that occurred especially near the end, were going to happen. I was constantly on the edge of my seat and I wanted these two to have some sort of HEA.
Overall I'm hoping to see if Kris dives back into this world, their are a ton of side characters that I'd like to get inside their heads, especially Andino and Haven, there is more to tell with that couple for sure. Apr 11, Renee rated it it was amazing. You need to read the first book Loyalty first before picking this book up or your going to be lost. This book is so action back and emotional. It is a story of doing whatever it takes no matter the consequences. This is also the story of family, righting the past and of course the relationship between John and Siena and of course true love conquering all.
As you know John is bipolar and it is not always under control but in Disgrace he finally gets the help he needs but it also exposes his illness to Cosa Nostra. There is also a war coming between the Marcellos and the Calebreses which puts John and Siena on opposite sides. This reminds me of Romeo and Juliet and it doesn't let these two from seeing each other in secret.
She is a pillar of strength for both John and his family but this could cost her everything. But, Siena is willing to risk it all for the love of her life. You also get to see three generations of the Marcello family in this book which I thought was absolutely amazing. This has not been a hearts and roses kind of duet but one that is more real to life than one I have read in a while and I ended up loving this duet so much.

I really loved that. The confusion, the uncertainty he had when it came to him and his family accepting the way he is. That showed a vulnerable side to John that I would say not many people get to see. That enriched the story even more. Both Siena and John are very strong characters, and with the story they have grown too, proving their strength and determination. Their relationship was kept so real, especially considering their situation. Nothing was rushed, nothing was left unexplained.

Siena fought for John and had his back every step of the way. The Marcello family was a crime family that I can get behind. They had more than just loyalty when it came to being a part of th If you took the time as a reader and read Loyalty, then you need to jump into Disgrace. They had more than just loyalty when it came to being a part of their family. They had hope, faith, and love.
I loved the bromance that Andi and John had. They weren't just cousins. They were best friends. Sometimes the two didn't see eye to eye but they always had each others backs. When I was reading, I didn't think about the amount of pages or the amount chapters given. I was thinking about what was going to happen next and how John and Siena's story was going to unfold.
There were times I was on edge, others I was laughing because of the one liners, and others I felt the pain of what John was feeling. The author knows how to write a good mafia romance but she also knows how to discuss the ins and outs of living with a mental illness. Apr 17, Shirley rated it it was amazing Shelves: John was just phenomenal and I fell head over heels for him, his daily struggles just blew me away. The way BK wrote his character was pure perfection and the way she tackled his bipolar and struggles was amazing. I loved his family network and how supportive they were.
Her unwavering love and support 5 Stars I bloody loved every second of this duet. Her unwavering love and support were off the charts. Also to watch as he felt inadequate and confused was heartbreaking at times. Apr 02, Anne Milne rated it it was amazing. Wars are being waged on many fronts.
The author perfectly balanced the two sides of this story, we have the Mafia on one hand and the love story on the other. This was a fantastic conclusion to their story in what is fast becoming one of my favourite Mafia series. Mar 17, Book Loving Fairy-Blog rated it it was amazing. A war is brewing between the rival families, spilling blood of men all over the streets. Whilst John is trying to address his mental health issues at rehab, Siena is suffocating under family's strict rules and her brothers constantly breathing down her neck.
I fell even more in love with John and Siena in Disgrace. She was his lifeline in the middle of the chaos and he was the reason wh Rating: She was his lifeline in the middle of the chaos and he was the reason why she left her only family to be with him again. I loved seeing their relationship bloom- how they became closer, and how John shared his most private moments with her.. She might be the single reason why John's relationship with his family was better. He managed to learn to live with his illness instead of letting it take over his life. This allowed others to see the best in him and also to be respected even more.
There were endless action, plot twists and drama. I loved the ending- revenge was served right up to those who deserved it! John finally stepped into the role that was meant for him all along- I had not expected that to be honest! Everything came together beautifully and it was amazing to read. Love This book was good. Loved the triaps and tribulations of people trying so hard to be together, but having so many bostacles in their path.
That song and those passionate lyrics were on a loop when I read this book. It's about being someone's ride or die. Someone that sticks by their partner through thick and thin, they swear to be true, to be loyal, always try, or die trying. John and Siena are my favorite ride or die couple. In book two, Siena is essentially a prisoner in her life. She does not move or breathe out of turn without her brother's or his enforcers over her shoulder. Siena, the product of the organization that controlled her, she did not wallow in her heartbreak, oh no, Siena got even. Her family underestimated her.
Oh boy did they regretted that decision. Siena and Andi, John's cousin and best friend, team up.
