They kiss passionately and Pete leads her to the bed. He then says if they make any move on ketchup he will terminate the account. Ken apologizes to Don for a waste of time.

Don wants to stay loyal to Baked Beans since they were there in the beginning. Back at Pete's apartment the woman says that her apartment needs a woman's touch. She says when she parks the car in-front of the driveway she is thinking of him. Megan is arguing with her maid because she had been washing her bra in the washing machine and not by had like she said so the bra is ruined.

She also mentions that she left the vacuum on the balcony and then fires her maid. Sylvia had entered the room at some point during her conversation with the maid and offers comfort to Megan.

Megan begins to cry and she and Sylvia go up to her apartment. Megan talks over her story line with Sylvia and then mentions she had a miscarriage. Sylvia initially thinks its about the show but then Megan says it happened two days ago. Sylvia appears nervous to talk to Megan about it. Megan says she got pregnant by being sloppy in Hawaii. She said she had not told Don and felt guilty over losing the baby. She mentions her and Sylvia's shared religious background and says she is a horrible person.

She states that it was bad timing and that she was relieved she did not have to make the decision on whether or not to keep the baby. Sylvia reveals she had a miscarriage about a year after having her son Mitchell so she understands some of what Megan is going through but states that the rest of it is not even a consideration. She says Megan must feel that way too or else she wouldn't be that upset.

The backdrop of the novel is fascinating, Paris under German occupation during the second world war. It's a story that deals primarily with the Resistence movement and those French who collaborated with the Boche.

This novel is more character driven rather than action based. Janine Simonian is a Frenchwoman married to a Jewish man, her world is literally torn apart during the occupation. Janine is a wife and mother who will do anyt Well written novel by an author whose work I haven't read before.

Janine is a wife and mother who will do anything to keep her family safe. The novel is intense and gritty, and quite an emotional read, it's disturbing in places. The hate and atrocities perpetrated by both sides, and the sacrifaces made during the occupation to keep body and soul together are harsh and unforgiving. I would have liked to rate the book higher, and whilst I appreciated the premise of the story I found it a little slow to gather momentum and I wasn't really satisfied with the ending.

I didn't want to give anything away on plot here as the story unfolds at its own pace and you find out how each person ends up at the end of the war good or bad. It is not a happy book given the circumstances but gives an insight into the war from the perspective of ordinary Parisian families and is worth the read even by people who don't enjoy war stories. This is an insightful, touching, thrilling, thought-provoking read.

Ideal for book clubs, as there are so many layers that can be discussed. It challenges the reader to consider the rights and wrongs or even if there are such concepts of collaborating with the enemy during war. Probably my least favourite Reginald Hill book. It's a reissue of a twenty year old not-exactly-a-mystery, set in occupied Paris during Quite different from his usual stuff. It wasn't the different-from-usual that put me off - the story just got off to a really slow start, seemed to be populated with indistinct characters and din't engage me at all. I kept going hoping it would get better, and it did. Occassionally it felt like a really good book, but mostly I found Hard one to sum up.
