If you're or should I sadly say, were an avid fan of the BBC TV series Merlin, this book is definitely what you need for a kick of nostalgia. It's based on the pilot episode, where a young wizard ventures to Camelot. I love the show because of the plot, likeable characters and the witty humour. It was a shame the ending was a HUGE let-down. I say they should re-film the last episode of the series, but we all know that's not going to happen. The writing in this book was well done and reflects the first episode. Jul 17, shannon rated it it was amazing Shelves: I love the show, and i love the book. The character descriptions, scenes and dialogue all match what's seen in the show, but the book goes into greater detail.
The Dragon's Call tells the story of a young teenage boy named Merlin who possesses a rare and powerful gift of magic. His mother sends him to Camelot to live under the guidance of the king's physician Gaius. Upon his arriv The first in a series of young-adult books to accompany the BBC series Merlin , this book tells the exact same story as the television show's pilot episode.
Upon his arrival to Camelot, he discovers that King Uther has outlawed magic upon punishment of death.
Merlin struggles to learn about why he was born with magical abilities, all while trying to keep his gift hidden. Only Gaius is trusted with this secret. Told in the subjective third-person point of view, we learn about Merlin's thoughts and feelings as he adjusts to his new life in Camelot. This was my favorite part about this book. While I've watched the TV episode many, many times, it doesn't go as deep into Merlin's mind as this book does. A fine companion to the TV show. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

White rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: The author has made the book exciting and every day I wanted to read more! Highly recommended to anyone! I really enjoyed this novelisation of the first episode of the TV series Merlin. It's one of my favourite shows and it was nice to revisit the show in novel form! The story is pretty much verbatim to the episode with little difference but it was nice to read it and envision the episode in my head.

Also, the relationship between Gaius and Merlin is really sweet in the narrative, a little more in-depth; I love their father-son dynamic. May 20, Angela rated it really liked it. Merlin wird von seiner Mutter nach Camelot geschickt in der Hoffnung, dass der Hofarzt Gaius ihm helfen kann.
At some point, he had lost his sword, and its familiar weight against his hip was no longer there as he ran. That meant the only thing he could to save himself was to run for his life, and that was exactly what the man was doing. Behind him, the man could hear the creature gaining on him. He could hear the sounds of the creature crashing through the forest; hear the sound of its breathing as it approached; hear the sound of it howling every now and then as he continued his flight through the forest.
The man had no idea what the creature was, and he did not really want to know. All he wanted to do was make it out of his current situation alive, something that was beginning to seem impossible. With each step he took, he felt his body resist. He was exhausted, bleeding, thirsty, and absolutely scared out of his mind. He longed to stop and rest, but he continued to push his body further. As he continued to run, he let his thoughts turn to what he had been doing earlier. His day had started out perfectly normal, but that had not lasted. It had quickly descended into a nightmare the likes of which he had never witnessed before.
Sir Andrew had been sent by Prince Arthur to handle a dispute in one of the small boarder villages. The dispute had been handled quickly, only requiring him to intervene a little bit. He had spent the night in the village, staying in the home of the village leader.
He left early the next morning, eager to get back to Camelot and enjoy the comfort of warm food and a soft bed. As he road along, nothing much happened. He met no one as he travelled, which was fine by him. He stopped a couple of times to water his horse and to eat a little food. When night came, he made camp in a small clearing. He had just lain down on his cloak to sleep, when he heard a sound in the forest. Getting up, he had grabbed his sword and tried to locate the direction the sound had come from. Suddenly, a large body appeared out of nowhere. He had barely managed to get out of the way when the body flew past him.
Whirling around, he prepared himself for a fight. Lifting his sword, Sir Andrew was not prepared for what he found himself facing. Standing in front of him was a creature that he had never seen before. It was covered in hair from head to toe and looked to be a cross of an ape and a bear, only it was walking upright.
Out of the corner of his eye, Sir Andrew saw his horse get spooked and run away. The creature in front of him raised an arm and swiped at him. Sir Andrew didn't react fast enough, and the creature was able to knock his sword from his hand. Defenseless, Sir Andrew did the only thing he could. He knows almost as much as she does about her subject area - and he's not even in school! His actions are sometimes awkward, and very out-of-the-blue - often to the level of absurdity. So when he offers to give her a tour of the old places in Wales - not far from his home - she can't help but wonder who fate has brought her.

The main character is Dyllan, and she is going to London to work on her Master's degree in Medieval Literature. Her subject is to learn more about Merlin, not really all the myths exactly, but more about him as a real man. There are several surprises for her when she arrives. One is that she has a roommate, which she didn't expect, but soon is very happy to have Gina around.

Another surprise is the guy she bumps into when she first arrives. His name is Emrys, and there is something about him. He's cute, and seems to know a lot about her topic of Merlin. And it isn't just once chance meeting, soon he is showing up other places unexpectedly. So she gets together with him, finding his information on her topic very helpful, if very much a different aspect than she'd ever thought about.
Gina doesn't know whether Dyllan should trust this guy that keeps just popping up, it's very stalker-like. And when they find out that Emrys's brother is someone Gina had to deal with in the past that wasn't someone she was really a friend of, it makes it even more of a bad idea in Gina's opinion, to hang out with Emrys. And Emrys himself doesn't always act like it is a good idea, although he keeps showing up and even needing Dyllan's help at times. All of the strange things going on are keeping Dyllan from getting her thesis done, and then, when Emrys takes her back to his home for a tour of the places that are where Merlin lived and was known to be, things really start to change.
She learns just how real Merlin was, or maybe even still is! And the romance isn't a big issue, but it is there, and I don't know if the ending satisfied me, or made me sad. I feel like I could definitely read another book with these characters, I want to know if Dyllan can get a happily ever after, or if it is just impossible, with Emrys especially.

While I wish for more, I feel the ending totally worked for the tone of the story, and fit perfectly for what the author was trying to do. I definitely will recommend it, and that is why at the end of this post, you'll find a giveaway for this book! Feb 08, Petra Be rated it really liked it Shelves: I really liked the story.
It shows that in legends there might be a bit of truth and for those of us who have never stopped looking out for unicorns, it's a great book to read though there are no unicorns in the book: I find quite amusing that she states in the book that the Europeans drive on the left. True, some parts are a little unbelievable, but the book is fast-paced in comparison to others on the same subject and is a fun read. I was truly glad that I got it.
