Also in , Defoe wrote Moll Flanders , another first-person picaresque novel of the fall and eventual redemption of a lone woman in 17th century England. The titular heroine appears as a whore, bigamist and thief, lives in The Mint, commits adultery and incest, yet manages to retain the reader's sympathy. Moll Flanders and Defoe's final novel Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress are examples of the remarkable way in which Defoe seems to inhabit his fictional yet "drawn from life" characters, not least in that they are women. The latter narrates the moral and spiritual decline of a high society courtesan.

Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain, and, along with others such as Samuel Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. A year later, she pleases her lover with a son.

There they live in great style until he is robbed and murdered for the jewels he carries on his person. Roxana moves up through the social spectrum by becoming the mistress of a French prince to whom she bears a son who becomes a great French general , becoming a great hostess in England where she is dubbed Roxana for her Turkish dancing , and finally being offered marriage by a Dutch merchant who helped her liquidate her wealth.

Her new life is threatened by the reappearance of her oldest daughter, Susan, who wants to claim her place in the upper classes besides her mother but Roxana is saved when Amy murders Susan.

The text ends on an "unfinished" note, with Roxana living in wealth with her husband in Holland, but assuring the reader that events eventually bring her low and she repents for her actions and experiences a downturn in fortune.
