Fields Of Grace

It begins with her life in Moab, how she meets Naomi, and marries Mahlon. In the meantime Boaz is devastated with the loss of his wife and children. The author took a lot of artistic license in writing this book but overall it was pretty good. Both Boaz and Ruth learn to trust God with their lives. It's a beautiful story although probably not very accurate. Aug 09, Kristin rated it it was ok Shelves: I read quite a bit of historical fiction and Biblical fiction.

Nowhere in the Bible does it mention that Boaz had another wife and children. It feels too modern and out of place. I also thought similes were overused and everyone in this story was nauseous over every little situation they faced in life. They were nauseous from heat or embarrassment or from hunger. These poor folks needed a prescription for Zofran…just saying. Further, Ruth nearly died in every chapter it seems.

This lady had very little luck. Heatstroke, hemorrhage, smoke inhalation…you name it and she nearly died from it. The swift point of view change from that of Ruth to Solomon and David was also rather abrupt. These are simply my views. You may read the book and love it. Tessa Afshar has taken one of the most beloved stories in the bible and alighted it on my heart once more. In the Field of Grace exemplifies how God delights in using the most unlikely people to fulfill His divine purposes. Through a series of seemingly unrelated events, Tessa Afshar reveals how the Lord begins to weave Ruth into the lineage of Israel.

Ultimately He provides hope for the world through the union of Ruth and Boaz. The opening chapters lay a strong foundation for the remainder of th Tessa Afshar has taken one of the most beloved stories in the bible and alighted it on my heart once more. The opening chapters lay a strong foundation for the remainder of the story by opening a window into the lives of Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi before their lives begin to intertwine.

Over the course of the novel additional characters enrich and endear the story to its readers. Just as I would envision Ruth of the bible, Tessa portrays her character as a humble servant — kind and compassionate. I was drawn to her light hearted humor that seemed to chase away the grief that she had to bear. She extended grace to those who mistreated her and won their affections through her selfless service to Naomi. I particularly liked how the author created Boaz to be more than just a rescuer or romantic interest in the story.

Written as a strong male character, Boaz is not exempt from fear and insecurities. He took interest in the lives of those who worked for him, acted honorably in his pursuit of Ruth, and personified a cheerful giver. It will be available for purchase July 1, from River North Fiction, a division of Moody Publishers I received this book free from the publisher through the NetGalley review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I really enjoyed this biblical fiction account of the book of Ruth. This is my second book by this author and i am looking forward to reading more.

She is becoming a favorite of mine! Feb 24, Lydia Overweight Bookshelf rated it it was amazing. Her newest novel, In the Field of Grace River North , follows the beloved story of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz and has already garnered much acclaim, and rightfully so. Ruth, a Moabite, marries an Israelite man and is welcomed in to his loving family and adopted as true daughter by her benevolent mother-in-law Naomi.

When tragedy falls upon their house and both women are left childless penniless widows, Naomi decides to return to her home in Bethlehem, releasing Ruth of all duty to accompany her mother-in-law to a life of unknowns and guaranteed toil. Her love for Naomi would not allow her to abandon the only true mother she has known and loved even though she is destined to live on the periphery of society, branded an outsider.

She dedicates herself to a life of serving Naomi, who has lost all her radiance in her impenetrable cloak of grief and embitterment. He too has suffered great loss and has remained a childless widower for ten years, never tempted to bind himself to another woman after the loss of his Judith and children. That is, until he sees the effervescent Ruth gleaning in his fields and hears of and witnesses her humble and self-sacrificing nature.

What follows is an exquisite love story that is testament to the power of surrender to God. Sometimes when a story is so familiar to an audience it can lose the poignancy of its message and the virtues of the characters are taken for granted. What Tessa Afshar has excelled at accomplishing is reinvigorating veneration for this treasured book of the Bible. She follows the biblical narrative closely and takes few artistic liberties so that the integrity and lessons remain intact.

No, these three personalities and their companions walk alongside the reader and beckon them deep in to their journey of healing, belonging, hope and love. I have never read anything by Ms. Afshar before, but oh my word It was beautiful, from start to finish.

I have always loved the book of Ruth in the Bible. And this story just made it come even more alive for me. I haven't read much biblical fiction at all, but if every story was like this, I'd read it nonstop! The romance, the promises of God, all wound together in an incredible, easy to read, enchanting way.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I love the liberties that the author took and that it read like a romance, while totally staying completely true to the timeline and story of Ruth. Afshar is an incredibly talented storyteller and I look forward to reading more of her books. Jun 03, Kav rated it it was amazing. Tessa Afshar has an incredible gift of bringing the bible to life through her exquisite biblical retellings. A familiar and much loved bible story becomes so much more thanks to the rich historical detail and intrinsic gospel truths that I eagerly took to heart -- like this beauty: Sometimes the sweetest things in life rise up out of the worst things in life.

This author is new to me. I love the story of Ruth. I understand this is a fictional, might have been story. Yet it was quite interesting and entertaining. Looking forward to many more by this author. Mar 10, Oceana rated it it was amazing Shelves: It blended fiction with biblical history flawlessly. Feb 04, Beth rated it really liked it Shelves: Ruth grew up with a family that treated her as less-than. Not until she meets Naomi at the market does Ruth experience true kindness, and after marrying her son, she experiences acceptance and happiness with the Israelite family.

Naomi, a poor widow, and Ruth, a Moabite and therefore an outsider, must do what they can to survi Ruth grew up with a family that treated her as less-than. Naomi, a poor widow, and Ruth, a Moabite and therefore an outsider, must do what they can to survive, which means each day Ruth must glean what she can after the harvesters go through the fields. This is where the stage is set for the remarkable legacy that God has prepared for Naomi, Ruth and Boaz, a story that flowed easily from the pen of author Tessa Afshar.

If you have read the story of Ruth, that is what you get here, though Afshar has added some lovely secondary characters and interactions with Boaz that put a new spin on the story. The plot flows well and while scenes are added to the story for artistic license, nothing goes against the events in the Bible. The description of harvesting the fields and the lifestyles of Boaz versus Ruth and Naomi were well-done and added great depth to the story.

The setting of Bethlehem and their life there really came to life for me. The scene on the threshing floor between Ruth and Boaz was done well, and I thought their scenes together were endearing. At times I thought there was too much time spent on their inner dialogue. I think there could have been more action, more at stake and less lengthy inner soliloquys. The spiritual aspect touched on some important spiritual truths, but there were a couple of moments that I felt it bogged down the flow of the story.

I think that could have been expounded upon and heightened the stakes in the story, perhaps touching a bit more on the politics and customs of the time. She touched on an imagined past for both Ruth and Boaz, which made their time together and their imagined future even more genuine. Though I have read the book of Ruth more times than I can remember, upon reading the last page, I felt entreated to go back and read it once more with fresh eyes and a fresh heart. This retelling of the story of Ruth hits the mark, and is a great addition to the genre of Biblical fiction.

Ruth leaves her home with a barren womb and an empty future, after losing her husband. She forsakes her abusive parents and follows the woman she has grown to love as a true parent, her husband's mother, Naomi.

Ruth arrives in Israel with nothing Title: Ruth arrives in Israel with nothing to recommend her but Naomi's, love. She is destitute, grief-stricken, and unwanted by the people of God. Her loftiest hope is to provide enough food to save Naomi and herself from starvation. She is reduced to gathering leftovers once the harvesters have finished collecting grain from the field.

A job only for the lowest of the low. But God has other plans for her life. While everyone considers Ruth an unworthy outsider, Ruth is shocked to find the owner of the field-one of the wealthiest and most honored men of Judah-is showing her favor. Long since a widower and determined to stay that way, Boaz finds himself irresistibly drawn to the foreign woman with the dark, haunted eyes. He tells himself he is only being kind to his Cousin Naomi's chosen daughter when he goes out of his way to protect her from harm, but his heart knows better.

How can God forge love, passion, and new hope between two such different people? It is a great story. Ruth was playing matchmaker Adan and Dinah. Boaz thought she liked Adan and he was a bit upset and jealous. It was a romantic story. This will make you look at the Biblical account in a different way. Fans of biblical fiction will love it. The epilogue is about David and his memories of Ruth. May 23, Hilary rated it really liked it Shelves: Ruth's story here starts before the Biblical one has any detail, creating a realistic backstory for Boaz, and showing how Ruth and Naomi met and became such friends that Ruth would willingly give up her life, family and gods to follow Naomi back to Bethlehem.

The journey itself is almost an afterthought in the Bible, but here we're reminded of the hardship it entailed, especially for two poor women traveling on their own, and the hopelessness both must have felt at times. Boaz' interest in Ruth, Ruth's story here starts before the Biblical one has any detail, creating a realistic backstory for Boaz, and showing how Ruth and Naomi met and became such friends that Ruth would willingly give up her life, family and gods to follow Naomi back to Bethlehem.

Boaz' interest in Ruth, or at least his positive attention, is given thoughtful consideration. It seems certain that he knew who Ruth was, as the town was quite small, but also that his actions were not just charity - Ruth worked hard for the grain, after all - but an additional blessing that a kinsman could provide without obligation or insult.

Each character has a place, a purpose, a story, and a reason for behaving as they do. Tessa Afshar]'s language is rich and vivid, full of images and sensations, allowing me to experience each moment with them. I do think Pearl of Sand was better, but this was still a great read. I finished it just before midnight, being unable to sleep otherwise! I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz. I was a little surprised with the beginning, but it didn't take me long to realize that she was giving some background. Afshar takes literary license I believe that's what it's called she does a good job of staying true to what we do have of Ruth's story. I found Ruth's family sad, the way they treated her. I was so glad that I really enjoyed this retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz. I was so glad that she had her grandfather. Her care of him was very sweet.

I loved how he wanted to hear about "The Lord". Her care of, and concern for, Naomi was very touching. She really did care for her like a daughter. And Ruth showed a caring personality to others as well. I like how she reached out to those around her, as Naomi had done with her. It was a little shocking to realize that Ruth hadn't made a commitment to the Lord when she married Naomi's son.

I liked the epilogue, how she did a scene with one of Ruth's grandsons. I thought that was a nice ending. Sep 26, Ness Kingsley rated it liked it. Not my favourite of her books Harvest of Rubies! I loved how the author explained that as a Biblical novelist, she wanted her readers to come away from her version of the story of Ruth with feelings and emotions that you don't experience when reading it in the Bible.

The Field of Grace helped me connect with the people involved in the love story of Ruth and Boaz. From the get-go, Boaz shone with nobility and strength, but you also caught a glimpse of his love and sensitivity towards others. This book helped pull all the missing pieces together and brought realism to the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the insight it gave me.

To bring you right in the forefront of the action and make you believe you are there actually witnessing the events. This is my second novel from author Tessa Afshar, and with it comes the retelling of the story of Ruth. If you are familiar with the story than you know that Naomi, Ruth's mother-in-law, decides to return to Israel after losing both of her sons.

But before deciding to uproot Ruth from her own family roots, she relives her of any burden to stay with her along her to journey back to her home. Ruth vows that no matter what happens in life, she will always stay by Naomi side and so begins their adventure to Naomi's home. We learn that the harvest has been plentiful and even gleaners, are having success with picking up enough left over grain that they will not go hungry.

Ruth decides to venture out to take care of their needs and finds her way into the fields of Boaz. She first has to learn how to glean and being a Moabite woman, she is considered an outcast in town. With no one to help her, she decides to linger behind and take the leftovers if she can find them.

But soon she garners the attention of Boaz, the owner of the field, who is smitten with her looks as well as her quiet presence. When he learns she is the daughter of Naomi, his cousin, he realizes he must offer to help but not in the way to embarrass her. He warns his men to offer her protection while working in his fields and to ensure that each day, she takes home more than enough to feed them both.

While they are both learning lessons along the way, dealing with grief, accepting God's will in both of their lives, and slowly falling in love along the way, we can see the same example being laid out before each of us. How God so lovingly romances all of us and shows us in innumerable ways just how much He loves us.

Fields of Grace

I love the part of the novel where Boaz it trying to describe what the world is like to an unborn baby and he gets a lesson from God in the process in dealing with the grief and loss Boaz feels when he loses his wife Judith and their unborn child. Do you think he knows what your world is like now?

He only knows his mother's womb. His world is too small. I could use every word the world has to offer and he would still not perceive our world. He has to be in it to understand it. Yet that world is no less real than your own. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own unless otherwise notated. This is such a beautiful love story not only between Ruth and Boaz but also between God and us.. There are just so many wonderful take aways from this novel I simply can't list them all.

For those that have experienced loss and are looking for answers, I would encourage you to check out this novel and then follow it up with the story of Ruth from the Bible.

Although the writing wasn't as tight as I thought it could have been, I found the descriptions to be lovely and really could imagine the time period and what all was happening.

I could see the fields and almost feel the dust and heat. I could imagine the hurt and longing. The book did a good job at coming to life for me and helped me think thoughts about the account in the Bible that I hadn't really had before. The account of Ruth has always been somewhat confusing to me, probably since I don't fully understand what the culture was like back then.

It's amazing to me how people lived their lives and conducted business and just went about day after day. This book spurred on a bunch of random thoughts regarding life back then and life now and how different, and similar, life is the world 'round, even centuries apart. I enjoyed the story a fair amount, and the first half of the book a lot. This book is the blood and guts of raw faith and God's amazing grace. May the readers experience their own "fields of grace"! A very riveting book, in depth, and honest. I know one of the families that lost a son in the plane crash, it was devastating for the family as it was for all of the families who lost a son. A tragedy that all so young would be gone so soon. It is great that Hannah was able to share the experience and many prayers for her to go forward in her life. I chose this book because I have met this young lady and her family. I was very impressed with her personal strength and persistence in plowing through the spiritual questions she had.

She was very courageous in her honesty of what it was like growing up in the environment of her father's ministry. She writes with love and candor without bitterness or anger. Ironic how her family instilled strength and independence in her which enabled her not only to recover, but also to choose her own beliefs and direction. This was a Great Story , It was very well writing. I also would recommend this book to any young Readers in their teen years. Some of the parts about her injuries are maybe a little hard for very young readers.
