Native Americans, Part 1 unit Study

The Sign of the Beaver. This is a chapter book without pictures. It is probably a fourth or fifth grade reading level.

It would make a great read aloud book too. The book More Than Moccasins: It is full of art and craft actvities as well as information. Most of our time studying Native Americans was spent in this book. We made tepees, wigwams, wampum, clothing, anklets, armbands, headdresses, food, and more! The punch-out kit made a canoe, totems, people figures, and a longhouse. Here are a few pictures showing some of our activities for our Native American unit study.

Books by Lois Lewis

Here we learned about different colors of paint and designs and what they could mean. The boys chose the colors they wanted on their face. We made paper mache rattle instruments to be used during dancing. After the paper mache had dried the boys painted them. Mavis Two Bulls and her sister Rachel Nava share their family recipe. Also, there are photos of buffalo parts, like a buffalo hide and tail. Your students are encouraged to guess the traditional use of the buffalo part and its location on the buffalo. Native American Education Due to cultural differences and socio-economic conditions, the challenges facing Native American students are many.

Native American Unit Study

You can download the free calendar to help you schedule everything or just check it off as you go. I include foreign language in our homeschool. There are four days scheduled per week to allow time for a co-op, field trip, or other activities on the 5 th day. Three weeks are planned out. The fourth week is optional and allows for catch-up or enrichment. The 4 th week gives more information about what is going on around the world during the time period, so it can easily be skipped or included.

For the same reason, if you want 5 days of study per week, pull activities from the 4 th week. Or, you could spend the 5 th day binge-watching all of the videos from the week, sewing, and cooking. I chose books that are inexpensive and can be re-used year after year.

Actually, they HAVE been re-used year after year by us!

Native American Unit Study | Taught By Grace

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Volume 4: The Kaya Unit uses a lot more video and a lot less reading than other units. A teepee is easy to sew, but after looking at the cost of fabric, I bought a teepee from Target during a prior year so we re-used that.

I also bought a teepee from Matilda Jane but the plastic pole-connectors broke really fast. For a no-prep no-fail solution, throw a bedsheet over a ladder and use your imagination. Sew the Native American dress pattern. There are 20 patterns included — and there is a pattern for nearly every doll. There is no need to buy expensive fabrics and notions — use scraps and use what you have on hand if you prefer. If you are planning on making an outfit for several girls, this would be cost-effective because it includes so many patterns.

Keep in mind that your child might like to try sewing an easier pattern. This made it really easy for us to watch the videos without having to constantly click and search around. No page numbers are given for reading the American Girl books and other books with easy to find chapter headings. This allows flexibility to use whatever version of the books you have, and to read as much as your child is interested in that day.

If you are reading the new version of the Kaya book, plan to read the first third of the book this week. If you are reading the old versions of the Kaya book where they are separate books, you will finish the first book in the series.
